Despite playing guitar, I hadn't thought of using a pick :-) As for Apple making them more reliable, the cynical side of me says "why? they make plenty of money from dead ipods" I suspect the majority of them last beyond the warranty, and few people will be willing to open them up to reseat the connectors.
